- A Republican has entered the race for Hampshire County Commissioner, 77-year-old Katharine Root. Miss Root, the only woman ever to be elected to the board of selectmen in Easthampton, announced her candidacy this morning.
- The use of the Armory Street parking lot has increased “tremendously” since a three-week period of free parking began on Aug. 16, according to a parking supervisor and a businessman who has observed the lot regularly. “The lot is not completely full now, but close to it,” parking supervisor Bernice Powers said.

- The Northampton Planning Board gave its unanimous approval Thursday night to a request to build a new multifamily building on Michelman Avenue and to renovate a six-unit building on the same street. The request came from developers with the Valley Community Development Corporation & HAP who hope to begin construction on the projects in early winter.
- AIDS has touched David Vander Held’s life in a number of ways, so when he saw an advertisement in the Advocate newspaper in February for a benefit ride from Montreal to Portland, Maine, he decided he’d take part. Vander Held, 48, of Northampton, will join about 3,600 people Sept. 5-9 for a 400-mile bicycle ride through two countries.

- Karen Schweitzer and John Heffernan, both of the Anne T. Dunphy School in Williamsburg, and Keith Wright of Hampshire Regional High School in Westhampton, have received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This award is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.
- A new advisory role established to advance campus diversity has been filled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Enobong Branch, associate professor of sociology, was named by Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy to serve as his faculty adviser for diversity and excellence.
