Timothy Goggins, manager of Congressman Silvio O. Conte’s Holyoke office, has been named campaign manager of Conte’s re-election campaign. Goggins, a Northampton resident, is taking a leave of absence from his government job to run the campaign.
To prevent the accelerated erosion of the banks of the Oxbow of the Connecticut River, the Northampton Conservation Commission agreed last night to sponsor a proposal which would limit the speed of motorboats there. Waves from the wake of the boats speed up the erosion process, acting chairman Robie Hubley said.

The University of Massachusetts could be transporting some of its trash to the Northampton landfill by the middle of September. Amherst has cut its landfill hours to push back the day it has to close. With students arriving on campus next week, UMass can no longer dispose of all its trash in the limited time that trucks can go to the Amherst landfill. So, officials invited bids from other disposal sites, and Northampton submitted the only bid.
A temporary one-lane bridge over the Oxbow on Route 5 opened Friday with a pledge from the state’s highway chief that a new bridge will be built within two years, to be named the Pearl Harbor Veterans Memorial Bridge. Local veterans groups had requested the bridge be named after veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack.

As golden sunlight splashed through trees, some 1,500 people gathered at Look Park on Tuesday for what has become a longstanding celebration of local music. Transperformance 26 — the annual music benefit for arts enrichment in the Northampton public schools — brought together a cross section of the community at the Pines Theater.
After projected enrollment at Hampshire College fell short this semester, 15 vacant faculty and staff positions will remain unfilled in an effort to plug the resulting $2.6 million budget gap. The deficit comes after 62 fewer students than anticipated enrolled for the coming year at the school of about 1,400.
