- William H. Burke III, assistant chief probation officer in the Northampton District Court, was named today to replace former Chief Probation Officer Jeremiah G. Lucey, who retired Friday. Burke, 33, was named to the $21,000-a-year post by Judge Luke F. Ryan.
- A 10-day Three County Fair will probably be continued in the future, officials, who were pleased with this year’s attendance which topped 100,000, said today. The number of people who attended this year’s fair was about the same as in 1975, when the fair ran for just nine days.

- Christopher Powers, 37, a manager at Czeluzniak Funeral Home of Northampton, says he expects to go to New York City to join experts and officials in the grim work of identifying victims killed in the World Trade Center attack Tuesday. Powers says he has been told to report by Friday to Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, N.Y., where he and other members of the Disaster Mortuary Team will be posted.
- Theresa Charlebois of Walnut Street has learned that her nephew, David Charlebois, 39, was a co-pilot of the hijacked plane that crashed into the Pentagon on Tuesday. His grandfather, John Charlebois Sr., a mechanic who founded the Auto Infirmary in 1912, was celebrated for teaching Amelia Earhart auto mechanics in 1918.

- Facing a state order and threat of fines, a Hadley contractor has cleaned up a massive pile of concrete demolition debris that was dumped along the banks of the Connecticut River. The Department of Environmental Protection traced the debris to the demolition and reconstruction of a sidewalk and structures at 64 Gothic St. in Northampton, where a long, concrete handicapped-access ramp has been installed.
- A party drew more than 1,000 people to Hobart Lane early Sunday morning, and partygoers threw beer bottles at each other and responding officers, police said. The gathering at Gilreath Manor Apartments prompted seven officers to respond.
