NORTHAMPTON — A Northampton man denied multiple assault charges Tuesday following an incident along Main Street.
Christopher J. Devine, 37, pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court to charges of assault and battery on a person over 60, disorderly conduct and assault and battery.
Northampton Police were called to the area of 16 Main St. around 7:25 p.m. Monday for a disturbance.
When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Devine, being pinned down by a Hampshire County Sheriff correctional officer, according to court documents.
The officer, John Vanasse, told police he was having dinner across the street when he saw an altercation between Devine and another man. Devine allegedly punched the 67-year-old man, who then fell back and landed on the sidewalk, according to court documents.
Devine allegedly pushed another man after “aggressively” walking towards him and saying “let’s go,” according to court documents.
Following his arraignment, Devine was released on conditions that he stay away from and not have contact with the alleged victims. He is being represented by attorney Rachel Weber.
