50 Years Ago

■Former director of development and alumnae relations at Smith College, Herbert Heston, has agreed to volunteer his services to help the St. Michael’s Alumni Association and the Mr. and Mrs. Club, an organization of parents, mount a capital funds campaign to provide continuing support to families of children enrolled at St. Michael’s schools.

■Smith College has broken ground on a new $4 million athletic building which will include a six-lane 75-foot swimming pool, a full-size gymnasium, six squash courts and spectator seating areas. The new gym is scheduled to open in the fall of 1976.

■Northampton’s first roadway bike lanes will soon be coming to Elm Street. The construction of the bike lanes, which is supported by Smith College and cycling advocates, will serve as a pilot project with the possibility of their being extended in both directions in the future.

■Allison Eberhard’s first act as president of Smith college was probably the most difficult of all — reporting for duty at 8 a.m., when she’s accustomed to beginning her day around 9 or 10. Eberhard, a junior, won the honor of serving as the college’s president for a day in a raffle drawing last month to benefit the senior class.

■After receiving its final state approval April 3, the organization preparing to open a medical marijuana dispensary on Conz Street began growing marijuana last week, and expects to start selling it to patients around Sept. 1.

■His performance as a Burger King employee and rapping about a retiring teacher helped Easthampton High School senior Kyle Richard win the title of 2015 Mr. Easthampton during the ninth annual mock male beauty pageant last Friday.
