200 Years Ago

■The washing for the Round Hill School from July 1 to Oct. 1, of the present year, will be let out by contract; persons disposed to take the same are requested to apply at the Hill immediately. Wanted, as above, for the same period, 40 lbs. of the best butter, weekly; also, two prime cows. — Jos. G. Cogswell.

■Horace Barns, of Northampton, wishes to purchase one or two hundred bushels of lime in the course of the summer or fall, for which cabinet furniture will be paid.

100 Years Ago

■Clifford H. Lyman of this city has received an interesting communication from Thaddeus J. Merrill, a prominent attorney in Aurora, Ill., in which he states that President Coolidge “may count on my vote.” He added “I shall try to induce my friends to vote likewise, for the country needs Calvin Coolidge.”

■There was but one case in district court this morning. A Northampton man was fined $15 for drunkenness, but the sentence was suspended for two years on a promise of better behavior.

50 Years Ago

■The Northampton Redevelopment Authority formally voted Monday night to approve the first phase of the city’s proposed $3.9 million urban renewal plan and named it the Pleasant River project. The $107,000 survey and planning budget will be presented to the city council with a vote on the project expected June 20.

■Co-publishers of the Daily Hampshire Gazette have purchased the former First National building on Conz Street and announced Thursday that the entire news operation “will probably be moved to the new location within a year” following renovation of the building.
