■A Springfield firm has filed a request for a variance with the zoning board of appeals to permit it to construct a 219-unit condominium development around Fitzgerald Lake in Florence. The developer also contemplates building a community building and tennis courts in the community.
■Sylvan Village, to be built in Chesterfield by Charles and Russell Bisbee, could be ready to open in 18 months, Charles Bisbee said Monday. But an official in the Western Massachusetts Health Planning Council said nursing home applications now filed with the state for Area 2, which includes Northampton and the Hilltowns, will be delayed indefinitely.
■In Tuesday’s preliminary election, City Council President Mary Clare Higgins came in first, with 53.4 percent of all votes cast. Tony Long took second place, with 25.3 percent of the votes.
■A plant that will add chemicals to the city’s water system to make it less acidic is under construction near the Williamsburg line. Work began about two weeks ago on a small wooded site across Route 9 from the St. Mary Assumption Cemetery, where city drinking water will be treated.
■Gleason Johndrow Landscaping, a Northampton-based snow removal and landscaping contractor, was named to industry publication “Snow Magazine’s” top 100 snow removal contractors nationwide. Tony Gleason and Dave Johndrow have been providing landscaping and snow removal services since 2002.
■Northampton resident Lori Holder-Webb, Western New England University associate professor of accounting, has received the 2014 KPMG Outstanding Published Manuscript Award from the American Accounting Association Gender Issues and Work-Life Balance Section.
