HOLYOKE — More than four firetrucks were on scene in Holyoke to respond to a blaze that broke out at a Lincoln Street house on Thursday afternoon.
The fire at 161 Lincoln St. started at 3:15 p.m. prompting first responders to block off access to the street near Route 5. Flames were visible from several areas of the home, including the upper stories and roof.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear porch and kitchen area of the home, according to a post on the Holyoke Fire Department Facebook page. Crews were initially able to extinguish the fire on the porch and in the kitchen but due to clutter/hoarding conditions were unable to make it into the second floor rooms or attic where fire had already extended.
Crews were ordered out of the structure and went into defensive operations. The fire was contained to the original structure with no extension to any other buildings, the Facebook post said.
Katherine Pater, who lives several blocks away from where the fire occurred, said she tried to pull in to the street on her way home only to be turned around by police. She remained on scene to watch the fire from a distance and said she saw five people and one dog who had apparently been evacuated receiving medical attention.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
There was one minor injury to an occupant and he was treated and transported. There were no injuries to firefighters at the scene, accordnig to the Holyoke Fire Department. The cause is under under investigation by The Holyoke Fire Department, the Holyoke Police Department, and the Mass State Police Fire Marshall’s office.
