GOSHEN — Winds of 20 mph fanned a brush fire that spread across 4 acres Friday that was ignited after illegal burning by the property’s owners.

As many as seven fire departments were called to 244 West Berkshire Trail Road at 11:20 a.m. The departments had the fire under control just over an hour later, by 12:30 p.m., before it was able to spread to the property’s 1846 farmhouse, which was spared, the Goshen Fire Department said.

However, damage was inflicted on an outbuilding and the side of a barn located on the property which is surrounded by a wooded area that fed the brush fire.

Aside from this damage, there was no harm to any homes, properties, people or animals.

The departments of Northampton, Easthampton, Westhampton, Cummington, Plainfield, Williamsburg, Hinsdale, and the State Fire Service all came to support the Goshen fire department in addressing the fire.

Following the fire, Goshen’s Fire Chief Cameron Lacey commented that “this is brush burning season” which runs from Jan. 15 through May 1 in Massachusetts, but added that this does not allow residents total free range for burning.

During brush burning season, residents are allowed to burn brush, including garden debris and tree trimmings, but this cannot be done without a permit from local fire authorities.

“Contact your department before burning,” he advised.
