HADLEY — A high-speed chase in Hadley on Wednesday night ended with a car crash that closed part of Bay Road after an unmarked police vehicle collided with the pursued vehicle just outside the Hampton Inn.

The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. with police pursuing a vehicle traveling at high speed. At one point, the vehicle traveled off the road and illegally passed other vehicles while heading westbound toward Route 9. The vehicle was pursued by multiple unmarked State Police vehicles and regular cruisers.

Upon approaching the Hampton Inn, the vehicle turned into the hotel’s parking lot, circling around the area in an attempt to escape from police. After driving through the grass to get back onto Bay Road, the vehicle then collided with an undercover police car, putting the chase to an end. A Gazette reporter was at the scene and witnessed the chase.

At least one man in the vehicle pursued by police was taken into custody following the chase, while another person who appeared to be injured was put onto a stretcher. A law enforcement officer who had been driving the unmarked vehicle involved in the crash also appeared to have sustained minor injuries to his leg and at one point was put onto a stretcher and helped away from the scene by fellow officers.

Following the crash, police closed the section of road. Hadley police officers and firefighters also were on scene to assist with the crash.

The origins of the chase appears to have begun in Hampden County, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, which noted that none of their detectives had been involved in the pursuit. State Police and the Hampden district attorney’s office did not respond to requests for information about the incident on Thursday.

A woman who arrived on the scene, identified as a family member of one of the people in the pursued vehicle, spoke to detectives following the incident but declined to comment.
