WESTHAMPTON — The Hampshire Regional baseball team overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Easthampton, 5-3, on Thursday afternoon at Earl Tonet Baseball Diamond.

The Raiders scored five unanswered runs, beginning in the bottom of the third inning, to claim their first win of the season.

“The first inning, we were swinging at high fastballs, we made errors that we normally wouldn’t make so it looked a little rough but then they worked themselves into the game,” Hampshire head coach Mark Baldwin said.

The Eagles’ three runs all came in the first two innings, which coincided with five Raiders fielding errors. Patrick Larson (double) and Jake Kostek (triple) got the visitors off to a fast start from the batter’s box in the first, before a few misplays from Hampshire during the second pushed Easthampton ahead to 3-0.

It wasn’t until an RBI single from Raiders catcher Zachary Phakos that got the hosts on the board in the third. Hampshire proceeded to score at least one run in each of the following three innings, finishing the contest with six hits.

“I think we scored all our runs with two outs, which is kind of hard to do,” Baldwin said.

Down 3-1 in the fourth, Riley Florek made it a one-run ballgame with an RBI single. The Raiders tied it during the fifth on an RBI double from Jacob Sicard, then went ahead, 4-3, on a successful sacrifice bunt from Phil Morin.

Joseph Breguet scored Hampshire’s fifth and final run after reaching base via hit-by-pitch during the sixth. Breguet also nabbed his first career varsity hit during the second with a single.

Both starters went the distance in this one as Colin Hogan got the win for Hampshire with five strikeouts and three walks. Easthampton’s Larson looked equally in control, concluding the outing with five K’s and two walks.

“He was spectacular,” Eagles head coach Ed Zuchowski said. “I’ve used him a couple games already this year just for a couple innings to work him up to a full game like he pitched today. I thought he did a really good job. A couple guys figured him out, but I think for the most part he did a good job with the lineup all the way through.”

Easthampton had a golden opportunity to even the score during the top of the seventh as it got its first two batters on base with no outs. However, the Eagles’ next two batters popped out. With two outs, the Eagles loaded the bases after Hogan walked Christian D’Onofrio, but the Raiders’ flamethrower immediately made up for it, ringing up Riley Davis to end the game.

“We needed that one hit to kind of break things open and it didn’t happen,” Zuchowski said. “The other thing is I told them, you got to play as perfect as you can in games like this.”

Larson and Kostek each belted a pair of hits for the Eagles, who are still searching for their first win of 2025 after falling to 0-4.

Sicard was the only Raiders batter to manage multiple hits in the victory.

“It was a really nice comeback,” Baldwin said. “I think turning the double play [during the fourth inning], that was kind of a big play. That was really good, it looked like we could play after that point and then we scored after that.”

Tantasqua 5, Belchertown 2 — The Orioles tied the game at two apiece in the fourth inning, but Tantasqua responded with two in the fifth and never let Belchertown get any closer on Thursday afternoon.

Canyon Charron and Joe Jordan recorded the lone hits for the Os and Charron and Thatcher Rudnik scored runs, while Ian McDonald drew a pair of walks.

Ludlow 9, Granby 8 — Brodie Funk, Brandon Carillon and Gavin Kennedy all tallied two hits on Thursday, but the Lions erased anh 8-7 Rams lead to win 9-8 in walk-off fashion. Granby dropped to 0-4 in a heart-breaker.

Joseph Barrett got the start for Granby, striking out five in five innings of work.

Smith Voc 13, SICS 3 (5) — The Vikings scored at least one run in every inning, including four in the first and five in the fourth, to pull away from the Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon.

Amherst drops to 0-4 on the season.

Agawam 12, Holyoke 1 (5) — The Purple Knights scored the game's first run in the top of the opening frame, but that would be all their offense mustered against a solid Agawam team on Thursday afternoon.

Monson 2, South Hadley 1 — The Tigers were nipped by the Mustangs on Thursday. Monson only managed four hits, but scored back-to-back runs during the fourth and fifth innings.

Justin Moskal tossed a complete game and struck out six Mustangs, but only got one run of support during the bottom of the seventh. Logan Carpenter (double) sprayed two hits for South Hadley.

Hopkins 5, Greenfield 1 — Chace Earle put on a show at Vets Field in Greenfield on Thursday, knocking three hits at the plate while striking out 15 and scattering just two hits on the mound to lead the Golden Hawks to a Suburban League West victory.

Nate Rickles singled twice and drove in three runs while Logan Bye knocked in a pair with a double in the win for Hopkins.

West Springfield 13, Northampton 3 — Seven Terriers runs right out of the gate stunned the Blue Devils, and they were never able to recover in a Thursday afternoon defeat in Northampton.

East Longmeadow 15, Easthampton 3 — A 3-2 lead in favor of the Eagles stood through three innings, but the Spartans erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open.

Summer Routhier (two runs), Madison Urban and Brooke Skowron all hit safely for Easthampton.
