CHARLEMONT — Tuesday marked the end of an era for the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School alpine ski team. For the first time in the program’s history – boys or girls – there won’t be a Scott on the team next season. Juliet Scott helped start the team in the winter of 2018 when her younger brothers, twins James and Teddy, were in sixth grade. The two were both on the inaugural boys team that season, and have been a part of the Dragons squad ever since.
The Scott brothers were each alternates during that season’s MIAA Alpine Ski Championships, but got to race because some of PVCICS’ skiers couldn’t make it that day. They have competed in every iteration of the state championships since that sixth-grade year, including the 2025 edition at Berkshire East Mountain Resort on Tuesday.
James finished 96th (55.13) in the slalom and 84th (1:03.50) in the giant slalom while Teddy left it all out on the mountain but couldn’t manage to cross the line either time. Despite not posting personal-best times, wrapping up their careers on their home course was certainly fitting.
“This is our seventh time now[at states], and it’s always great to have it on our home mountain,” Teddy Scott said. “You just get these teams from all around the state and the energy is great. They bring intensity and everybody is really happy to be here and happy to ski. It’s awesome. It’s a great day.”
“Skiing has taken us to a lot of really cool places. I finished both my runs, so, better than [Teddy],” James Scott joked. “There are some fantastic skiers out here, so I’m not getting a crazy time or anything, but I was happy to be able to embrace it and look around and be happy with what I’ve done in my career.”
Outside of the veteran presence of the Scott brothers and senior Sarah Fardal, who finished 81st (1:00.50) in the slalom and 66th (1:00.39) in the giant slalom on the girls side, PVCICS had two other participants on Tuesday – both underclassmen. James Janssen turned in times of 1:07.04 (slalom) and 1:09.28 (GS) for the Dragons boys team while Luo Yi Zhang finished in 1:07.28 (slalom) and 1:05.67 (GS) for the girls, both passing the test in their initial runs at the state meet.
Seeing Janssen and Yi Zhang maneuver through the two courses reminded the Scott brothers of their first rodeo way back in the day.
“This is both of their first time at states, and they both did fantastic,” Teddy Scott said. “They didn’t leave anything out there. They finished, which is very admirable. And they were just joys to have out here. I was really impressed with them and happy to be here with them.”

Isaac Stith and Coleton Duda seemed to enjoy the warm weather that Tuesday provided, as they each finished inside the top 32 in both the slalom and giant slalom to pace the Raiders’ boys team. Stith grabbed 21st (56.92) in the GS and 27th (48.60) in the slalom while Duda crossed the line 26th (57.74, GS) and 31st (49.26, slalom), respectively. Billy Warren (84th, 53.67 in slalom and 36th, 58.74 in GS), Cobyn Barry (115th, 57.61 in slalom and DNF in GS), Chad Hockenberry (129th, 1:04.57 in slalom and 117th, 1:13.65 in GS) and Jack Cameron (130th, 1:05.14 in slalom and 111th, 1:08.97 in GS) also raced for Hampshire.
On the girls side, Brooke Hockenberry posted a solid 44th-place finish in the slalom, cruising down the mountain in 56.32 to crack the top 50. Hockenberry was unable to finish in the giant slalom. Dana Warren slid in at 87th in the slalom in a time of 1:01.47, while G. Pica Smith (118th, 1:10.23 in slalom and 110th, 1:06.74 in GS) rounded out the Raiders’ girls team participants.
Keller Mahoney had the best day in Hampshire County, cracking the top 25 in both of his races. Mahoney has been the Blue Devils’ top racer all winter, and he backed it up with a stellar performance in the slalom and giant slalom. The senior took 21st (48.04) in the slalom and 24th (57.35) in the giant slalom through the slushy snow at Berkshire East. Henry Fallon (119th, 59.92 in slalom and 83rd, 1:03.48 in GS) and Jasper Tuck (132nd, 1:06.85 in slalom and 110th, 1:08.77 in GS) finished both races for Northampton’s boys team as well.
Simone Pagar and Crystal Eichwald-Hoopes were the Blue Devils girls team’s two competitors, with Pagar cracking the top 100 in both races (92nd, 1:03.05 in slalom and 94th, 1:03.13 in GS) and Eichwald-Hoopes putting together two good races as well. Eichwald-Hoopes finished in 94th (1:03.60) in the slalom and 102nd (1:05.18) in the giant slalom.
A trio of Hurricanes girls competed at Berkshire East on Tuesday, with Amelia Morse, Anne Haugsjaahabink and Maya Phillips hitting the slopes for Amherst. Morse recorded two strong races, starting with the giant slalom (64th, 58.70) and ending with the slalom (52nd, 58.96). Anne Haugsjaahabink finished 106th in the slalom with a time of 1:06.95, and she did not finish the giant slalom. Maya Phillips (108th, 1:07.10 in slalom and 119th, 1:10.59 in GS) made her way through both courses just fine for the ‘Canes.
Wes Dunford was the lone boys competitor for Amherst, and he posted a time of 1:03.74 in the giant slalom, good for 86th, and did not finish in the slalom.
