HATFIELD — The town’s annual Luminarium event takes place Saturday, starting at 4:30 p.m. with a concert at the First Congregational Church and ending with the judging of floats at Smith Academy.
The float contest is new this year, though Kathleen Wyckoff, who chairs the Hatfield Celebration Committee, said it was logical to add to the event, explaining that each year residents decorate wagons, tractors and trucks as they drive throughout town to view the creative and festive light displays.
Those judged to be the best three floats will receive a trophy created by a local woodworker, as well as gift certificates to local restaurants. Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. during the townwide program from the steps of Memorial Town Hall.
From 5 to 6 p.m., Hatfield Public Library will feature holiday crafts and refreshments and a free children’s book giveaway.
At 5:30 p.m., luminarium candles are lit across town for people to view.
Then, at 6 p.m., before the float winners are announced, carols will be led by the Smith Academy Band and Santa Claus will arrive.
Santa will then greet children and families at 6:45 p.m. at the fire station.
Unlike some recent years, no fireworks will be shot off as part of Luminarium, a decision made due to the dry conditions for much of the fall.
