High schools: Shea MacLean, Belchertown boys basketball get past South Hadley

Shea MacLean had himself a night for the Belchertown boys basketball team against South Hadley on Tuesday. 

MacLean scored 11 field goals to finish with a game-high 25 points, helping the Orioles pull away with a 71-59 victory over the Tigers in Belchertown. 

It was the third win in the last four games for the Orioles, which improved to 6-7 with the win. The squad avenged a loss to South Hadley when the teams met on Jan. 4 (a 73-66 Tigers win).

Belchertown led 36-18 at the half but South Hadley stormed back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 52-46 going into the final frame. 

Cal Orzech tallied 11 points, Jackson Couchon and Jacob Pacunas each had nine points while Kyle Dunigan scored eight points for the Orioles.

Jack Loughrey scored 23 points, Isiah James tossed in 17 points while Noah Hambley added 10 points for South Hadley (6-4). 

Longmeadow 56, Amherst 44 – The Hurricanes fell into a double-digit hole after the first quarter and dropped a Valley Wheel contest on Tuesday.

Spencer Waite’s went for 13 points, including three 3-pointers, to pace Amherst. Sam Woodruff added eight points while Ryder Rietkerk and Mitchell Carey tossed in six apiece.

Greenfield 68, Frontier 59 — Nico Fasulo put in a game-high 21 points for the Redhawks in a Hampshire League South loss to the Green Wave in Greenfield on Tuesday. 

Rowan Modestow scored 17 points, Sasha Dragicevich finished with eight points while Owen Babb scored six points in the loss. 

Hopkins 69, Lenox 63 — Owen Earle’s 29 points powered the Golden Hawks past the Millionaires in a Hampshire League South contest in Hadley on Tuesday. 

James Fitzgibbons scored 18 points while Logan Bye added seven points for Hopkins. 

Central 57, Northampton 53 — Naihmond Peters-Wolfe dropped 20 points for the Blue Devils, which fell just short of beating the Golden Eagles for the second time this season. 

Central led 28-27 at the half but Northampton took a 41-40 lead going into the fourth quarter. 

Jackson Lockett scored 12 points while Silas Coles and JJ Moore each had six points in the loss. 

Easthampton 53, Baystate 40 – The Eagles stormed out of the gates to take a 19-8 lead after one quarter en route to the double-digit win.

Brayden English scored a team-high 15 points for Easthampton (2-9), and Noah Murray scored 13 in the win. Both of the Eagles’ wins this season have come against Baystate.

Girls basketball

Smith Academy 28, St. Mary’s 27 — Emilia Neves and Madison Zononi both tallied eight points, helping the Falcons knock off the Saints on Tuesday in Hatfield. 

Alexa Jagodzinski scored six points while Caitlin Graves recorded five points in the win.

PVIAC Meet No. 4

Northampton’s Keller Mahoney continues to move up the leaderboard at the PVIAC Alpine League, posting a runner-up finish in the boys’  slalom on Tuesday at Berkshire East in Charlemont.

Mahoney was the top local finisher, crossing with a 45.38 seconds for the second-place showing. Mohawk Trail’s Weston den Ouden was first overall in 40.66.

Hampshire Regional put two skiers in the top 10 overall on the boys’ side, with Billy Warren fourth overall (46.91) and Jon Dunn nabbing sixth (48.24).

PVCICS also had two top 10 skiers, with Teddy Scott (ninth, 48.79) and James Scott (10th, 49.38) setting the pace.

Other local top 20 finishers from Tuesday’s race were Hampshire’s Isaac Stith (12th), PVCICS’ Clayton English (14th), Hampshire’s Chad Hockenberry (17th) and Brandon Couture (18th), and Northampton’s Jasper Tuck (19th).

Amherst’s top finisher was Wes Dunford, who tied for 31st overall.

In the girls’ race, PVCICS’ Sarah Fardal was the top Hampshire County finisher in the GS via a sixth-place showing in 34.61 seconds. Mohawk Trail’s Addie Loomis won her fourth consecutive race to open the season with a time of 31.78 seconds.

Hampshire’s Hazel Scully-Henry (15th, 36.67) and Dana Warren (18th, 36.98) were also in the top 20, as was Northampton’s Camilla Hatch (17th, 36.95).

Amherst’s top finisher was Maya Phillips in 41st (42.97).

Girls basketball

Hampshire 50, Taconic 28 — The Raiders picked up a Suburban League victory on Monday night behind 15 points from Shayne Moynahan and nine points from Ali Jenkins.

Hampshire nearly doubled up the Thunder to improve to 6-6 this season. Julianne Moro (six points), Alyssa Colon Garcia (six points), Emma Allyn (five points), Mary Thibault (four points), Addie Miklasiewicz (three points) and Kat Simmons (two points) rounded out the balanced scoring attack in the win.

Drury 38, Belchertown 35 — Orioles guard Morghan Litz netted a game-high 13 points, but Belchertown fell just shy in a Central League matchup on Monday night.

The Orioles trailed by one going into the fourth quarter, but the low-scoring final frame (5-3) went the Blue Devils’ way. Alexa Karabetsos added nine points and Chloe LaRoche chipped in eight for Belchertown.
