EASTHAMPTON — A 25-year-old Blandford man died Saturday while kayaking in Lower Mill Pond, despite bystander efforts to rescue him, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Emergency responders received a 911 call at 2:45 p.m. from witnesses reporting that a man was in distress in the water. Two people had entered the water attempting to save him but were unable to rescue him. The kayaker was subsequently recovered by police dive team members, and he was declared dead at 5:15 p.m., according to the DA’s office. Another person kayaking with him was not injured.

The Easthampton Fire and Police departments, members of the Hampden County Regional Dive Team, Massachusetts State Police Dive Team, and the Massachusetts Environmental Police Boat and Recreational Vehicle Safety Bureau, as well as detectives with the Northwestern District Attorney’s State Police and the State Police Crime Scene Services Unit all were on the scene.

No foul play is suspected. The investigation is ongoing. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
