As a teacher at JFK Middle School, I am heartsick. We are not looking down the road at the potential harm of budget cuts; we are feeling it today.

In many ways, the mayor’s starkest (4%) cuts have already taken effect. Anyone who received a pink slip or involuntary transfer must assume the worst. Our schools are bleeding now, waiting on the fraying hope of a bandage. This is the time of year when teachers plan for the future, collaborating and reflecting to improve our students’ experience. How can you have these conversations when the phrase “next year” flings salt at an open wound?

Teachers impacted are looking for new jobs and are close to accepting them. I’m glad they’re taking care of themselves, but I am heartsick at the loss of their talents. Each school year starts with a district-wide convocation, with every teacher packed into the auditorium and speeches from the superintendent and mayor. I am struggling to imagine that event: both the colleagues in the seats next to me and the speakers touting their commitment to the NPS community.

This year’s theme, chosen by the superintendent, was “Yes, we are essential to what matters.” It is hard to feel that way now. I think of next year and I am heartsick.
