Imagine if, in another country, the previous president who tried to take over the government was protected by judges he appointed. That president’s supporters attacked the Capitol to stop the certification of the election. Just before the next election (where he’s running again) these judges gave him total immunity.

In any other country, news media would highlight the Supreme Court’s role in a developing authoritarian coup. But here in America, we are only debating if that ruling is legal or not.

Let’s look closer. The former president lost the election by a large margin. Election officials from both parties confirmed the results, and many courts (even with judges he appointed) rejected his claims of fraud. Despite this, he tried to overturn the results by pressuring the Justice Department and state officials, and incited a violent riot at the Capitol.

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling effectively grants him immunity from prosecution, and was made by justices with glaring conflicts of interest. These include justices who lied about ties to insurrectionists, accepted secret gifts from billionaire supporters, and refused to recuse themselves despite obvious conflicts.

Three of these justices were appointed by the former president under suspicious circumstances. One was confirmed despite unresolved allegations, another was pushed through right before an election, and the third was appointed after the Senate Republican leader blocked previous Democratic nominees.

If this happened in another country, we’d recognize it as a coup but here in America we are failing to understand the seriousness of this crisis. This isn’t just about legal decisions; it’s an ongoing plan to change our government into a dictatorship.

The extremist Republican-controlled Supreme Court is now the most powerful legislative body in America. It operates without democratic accountability, overturning laws to protect a minority at the expense of the majority.

The Roberts court has remade national elections to favor the Republican Party, interfering with elections and protecting Donald Trump from accountability. This isn’t just bad law; it’s an existential threat to our democratic way of life. Please vote in December like our democracy depends on it — because it does.
