Donald Trump’s incoming administration poses a serious threat to Americans’ health, safety and freedoms. His cabinet picks show a total disregard for science, human rights, and competent governance. The work of protecting the vulnerable begins now — and Democratic governors must lead the charge.

Governors are uniquely equipped to block federal overreach. They can shield their states from harmful policies while building a more compassionate and better model of governance. Leaders like Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and our own Maura Healey have the power and responsibility to act as a firewall against a reckless administration. Governor-elect Keith Ellison of Minnestota expressed it well: “We’re entrusted with protecting people, and we’re going to do it.”

Some early battles may be over health care. The Republican anti-science team threatens public health with policies that ignore basic medical realities. Democratic governors can respond by stockpiling vaccines, safeguarding abortion access, and expanding telemedicine. They can uphold vaccine requirements for schoolkids and invest in state health departments. These aren’t just policies — they’re acts of survival for millions of Americans.

The fight doesn’t stop there. If Trump guts worker protections, Democratic governors can enforce fair wages and safety standards. If he dismantles environmental regulations, they can sue polluters and champion clean energy. And now there are legal groups like Democracy Forward ready to back them.

Democratic governors must go on offense. To defend democracy, they can fight disinformation, invest in civics education, and collaborate across states to address critical issues such as transportation, natural resources, and public safety.

Most importantly, they must tell the truth about the harm caused by Republican policies. While that party spins false narratives, Democratic governors can highlight how these policies hurt children, families and communities. By exposing these failures and offering a better vision, they can inspire hope and action.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Democratic governors have a chance to lead the resistance to protect America’s future. With courage and unity, they can be the guardians of democracy we desperately need. I hope they will step up to these challenges now.
