LEVERETT — Several local Democratic Town Committees in Hampshire and Franklin counties, and Holyoke, are making an appeal to the Massachusetts congressional delegation to take stronger steps in confronting the Republican Party, the Trump administration and special government employee and billionaire Elon Musk.

The letter, sent Wednesday, demands work to prevent the entities in power in Washington, D.C. “from raiding and pillaging our commons.” The letter is endorsed by the Leverett, Worthington, Holyoke, Charlemont and Orange Democratic town committees, and Sara Seinberg, who chairs the Leyden Democratic Town Committee.

“House and Senate Republicans have given no indication that they are up to the task of holding their own party leaders accountable,” the letter reads. “It is therefore up to Democrats in Congress to save our democracy and our federal government. Unfortunately, thus far Democratic party leadership in Congress has utterly failed to meet the moment.”

Among the suggestions in the letter is a call to organize the Democrats in the Senate to replace Minority Leader Chuck Schumer:

“Leader Schumer’s strategy, articulated in an interview with The New York Times, is to withhold any meaningful opposition until Trump’s approval rating hits 40%, at which point Schumer believes some Republican Senators will begin to break with the president and work with the Senate Democrats to restore the rule of law. This is a fantasy,” the letter states.

Other ideas in the letter call for Democrats to withhold unanimous consent in the Senate, preventing business as usual from happening; to invoke quorum calls in the Senate every time Republicans tries to do anything; to defend oppressed people, including trans individuals and immigrants; to organize a road show in competitive House and Senate seats; and to work to create a “shadow cabinet” that can respond to Trump policies in real time.

“No one will step up in your place. You must rise to the occasion now, before it’s too late,” the letter reads. “You ran for office because you wanted to lead; now you must do it. Your job is to represent us. Please do it by stopping this disastrous regime from destroying our society.”

The letter is also signed by several Boston Ward Democratic committees and committees in other communities across Massachusetts.
