NORTHAMPTON — A 24-year-old Florence man who allegedly threatened to shoot his sister with a firearm during a verbal argument on Monday night faces a single count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Cleavon Anthony Thomas, who was arraigned on the charge in Northampton District Court on Tuesday, was arrested by Northampton police after the altercation at Meadowbrook Apartments on Bridge Road in Florence. Police were called to the apartment complex by Thomas’s 23-year-old sister, who reported that during a verbal argument with Thomas, he brandished a pink firearm and threatened to shoot her with it, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Police located and arrested Thomas at the scene, but were unable to find the firearm after searching the surrounding area, including a nearby brook.

In court Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Justine Aljoe filed a motion to have Thomas held without bail under the state’s “dangerousness statute.” The court, however, released Thomas on conditions that he undergo a mental health evaluation, maintain employment and possess no firearms.

Thomas is due back in court on Oct. 10 for a pretrial hearing.
