HADLEY — Drainage work on South Maple Street, near the entrance to the Popeye’s restaurant, marks the resumption of the ongoing Route 9 widening project Tuesday morning.

The state’s Department of Transportation recently informed town officials that the construction work, paused for much of the winter, will run daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with various detours and police details in place.

The 2.4-mile project, from town center at Middle Street east to the shopping malls, will feature three, 11-foot vehicle travel lanes, one in each direction and a dedicated turn lane, and an 8-foot wide, multiuse path on both sides of the state highway.

Baltazar Contractors, Inc. of Ludlow is handling the work that began in 2022 and is anticipated to be completed in spring 2026.

The town’s website will provide weekly updates about the status of the work and where work crews will be.
