SPRINGFIELD — A frantic pace filled the third quarter of the Western Massachusetts Class C girls lacrosse championship on Tuesday evening at Berte Field. Only 10 total goals were scored in the first half between No. 1 South Hadley and No. 3 Wahconah, and the two teams erupted for a dozen in the third frame alone.

PITTSFIELD — Michael Locher knew Friday’s Western Mass Class C boys tennis championship match wasn’t going to come easy. The head coach of No. 2 Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School came into it aware his team was shorthanded, as the Dragons were without their first doubles pair of James Scott and Teddy Scott – the team’s only two seniors – and their typical third singles player, Gabe Loinaz (injury).

SOUTH HADLEY — The pouring rain didn’t seem to slow down the No. 1 Northampton boys lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon at South Hadley High School, as the Blue Devils used goals from seven different players and a monster defensive effort to cruise past No. 4 South Hadley in the Western Massachusetts Class B semifinals.

Believe it or not, lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America. Dating back to the 17th century, the modern-day game originated from Indigenous tribes in Canada. The sport didn’t pick up in popularity in the United States until the 19th century, which also happened to coincide with the first-ever game to feature women.

SOUTH HADLEY — Needing only two points to eclipse 100 for her career coming into Thursday’s contest against Belchertown, South Hadley girls lacrosse senior Ava Asselin wasted no time hitting the century mark. Asselin scored two of the game’s first three goals, the latter coming on a free-position shot where she beat Orioles goalie Riley Nestor low, to accomplish the feat.

The Amherst girls lacrosse team had the most successful season of head coach Andrew MacDougall’s tenure in 2024. The Hurricanes went 19-3 and won their first ever Western Mass. tournament Class B title in an overtime victory against Belchertown.

UMass men’s lacrosse head coach Greg Cannella needed more saves. In the first game of the season against then-No. 13 Army on Feb. 8 at Garber Field, the Minutemen found themselves down 6-0 after the first 15 minutes. Graduate student goalie Tyler Bluse surrendered all six goals on 11 shots from the Black Knights during that opening quarter, putting UMass in an early hole.
