BELCHERTOWN – A motor scooter driver was flown to the hospital after she struck an SUV on Route 9 Friday night.
Acting Belchertown Police Chief Bruce Jenks said Sunday the 30-year-old Spencer woman was operating the scooter eastbound on Route 9 near Edelcy Drive at approximately 4:50 when she veered into the westbound lane and hit a traveling SUV.
Jenks said witnesses reported the woman was swerving in and out of the lanes of traffic before the crash.
Police found the woman on the ground alongside the scooter, which was on its left side touching the SUV. Jenks said the woman was taken by helicopter to Baystate Medical Center with injuries to her head, legs and torso area. Jenks said police do not know if the woman was wearing a helmet.
The 33-year-old Belchertown man operating the SUV was not injured in the crash, Jenks said.
A small area of Route 9 was closed to traffic briefly in order for the helicopter to land. The road was shortly reopened to one lane of traffic while personnel cleared the scene. Both lanes were reopened to traffic at approximately 7:45 p.m., Jenks said.
No charges were filed as of Sunday evening, but police are still investigating the accident. As a result, Jenks said he could not release the names of the drivers.
