Matt Huggett took a pass from Henry Attias and ripped a shot, thinking he brought Northampton within one goal of Algonquin with 2 minutes, 46 seconds left.

Instead, the referees signaled no goal, and No. 5 Algonquin prevailed 5-3 on Wednesday in the team’s Central-West Division 2 Tournament first-round matchup in Northborough.

The Tomahawks led 2-1 at halftime and 4-3 after three quarters.

Attias, Huggett and Ian Shaw scored for the No. 12 Blue Devils (12-7).

Shaw’s goal tied the game at 3 with 1:03 left in the third quarter before Algonquin closed the game with two consecutive goals.

Bryce Wall made 14 saves in the Northampton net.

Algonquin will advance to play St. John’s in the quarterfinals Thursday at St. John’s.

The loss was the last game for Northampton seniors Bryce Wall, Ryan Wall, Jack Dibartolo, Duncan Peterson, Huggett, Shaw, Kyle Luzzi-Dundon and Jasper Rhoads.
