GRANBY — Sophie Gatzounas showed her basketball hops on the soccer field.

The South Hadley senior goalie made 14 saves in a 0-0 tie with Granby on Sunday.

Two were at full leaping extensions that just tipped the ball over the bar.

“It all comes down to instinct,” Gatzounas said. “That’s what I rely on, get up and hope for the best.”

Late in the second half after Gatzounas’ second leaping save, the Tigers fought off three consecutive Granby corners to keep the game scoreless.

“She’s an amazing goalie. You have to shoot low and at the corners,” Granby freshman Julia Frappier said. “It’s a lot of pressure and we couldn’t finish this game.”

It was Gatzounas’ 11th shutout this season.

“Sophie is the best. This game just shows how she’s the best around,” South Hadley coach Eric Wood. “For her to shut out a Granby team in her last regular season game was awesome.”

The draw clinched the Pioneer North league title for the Rams (13-2-3, 7-0-1), who finished just ahead of the Tigers (12-4-2, 6-1-1).

“Shutting out a great team like Granby just before the tournament is great, but we had that goal, that league title in the background so it’s a little disappointment,” Wood said. “But we’ve had a great season and it ended with a great result.”

Both teams are qualified for the postseason and await Wednesday’s seeding meeting to find out who and where they play.

“Our offense just didn’t have an on game today, and I think we’ll be ready for postseason,” Frappier said.
