WHATELY — A box truck crashing into a utility pole on State Road Monday afternoon knocked out electrical power in the area for a short time.

The driver escaped injury.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from Chicopee, told police he was distracted by his cellphone when he drifted off the road and collided with a tree and a utility pole. at approximately 4:20 p.m.

According to the Whately Police Department’s Facebook page, the driver will be cited for numerous motor vehicle violations. Whately police, state police, Whately fire, and South County EMS responded to the call. Verizon and Eversource replaced the pole and restored power.

An Eversource spokeswoman said power was restored in less than two hours.
