Northampton Post 28 will be in unfamiliar territory when the American Legion state tournament begins Saturday in Milford.
A never before seen opponent, a new field, and for most of the players a first chance at a state championship.
But it is still baseball, and Northampton (22-3) will try to continued one of its best legion seasons ever against Barnstable at 4:30 p.m. at Fino Field.
“None of us really know the other teams,” Northampton’s Will O’Connor said after Thursday’s win over East Springfield. “We’re just gonna keep it rolling playing our baseball.”
The winner of the state tournament will advance to the Northeast Regional, and from there it’s the Legion World Series.
The bus for Post 28 will leave the Bluebonnet Diner after the team takes batting practice at Arcanum Field on Saturday at noon.
Friday was an off day for Post 28.
“We definitely needed rest,” Northampton coach Chuck Holt said. “We’ve played so many games recently in the heat. We took a day off for energy and recovering.”
Fortunately for Northampton, all the unfamiliar aspects of the tournament could prove rejuvenating.
“We are not worried about it,” Holt said. “Some new competition will be energizing. We are excited for fresh competition.”
Barnstable Post 206 (21-6) went 6-1 in the postseason on its way to a district championship.
Connor Bertsch is Barnstable’s top run producer with 20 RBIs to go along with a .418 average.
Bryce Conroy led Barnstable with a 5-1 record, 27 strikeouts and a 2.65 earned run average in 37 innings.
“They are a good team and have tons of team speed,” Holt said. “They like to run. Good all around.”
Northampton’s starter for Saturday has yet to be determined.
Zac Brittain pitched seven innings on Wednesday, so his availability is in question this weekend. After that Liam Pitrat or Kevin Banas could be options to start Saturday for Northampton.
“We are waiting to see whose arm feels fresh,” Holt said. “I am feeling very confident with whoever is ready to go.”
Northampton’s lineup has hit all summer, with a team average approaching .400, according to Holt.
“We are peaking at the right time and surging offensively,” Holt said.
