NORTHAMPTON — A Northampton woman denied charges that she threw a piece of broken glass at a man and hit him with a broom.
Anna M. Hansen, of 25 Cross Path Road, pleaded not guilty Monday in Northampton District Court to assault and battery on a household or family member and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Northampton Police were called to Williams Street just before 7:45 p.m. Friday for a report of a domestic assault. Police were met by a man who was bleeding from cuts to his mouth and head, according to a report written by Officer Zachary Hall.
The man told police he was returning home from Main Street when he saw a person, later identified as Hansen, in front of his house sweeping. The two exchanged words and then Hansen allegedly picked up a piece of glass off the ground and threw it at the man, hitting him in the head, Hall wrote.
Hansen also hit the man with a broom and dustpan, according to the report.
The man put Hansen in a “bear hug” so she would stop hitting him and told her he would let go if she agreed to leave, Hall wrote. Hansen allegedly agreed and then punched the man in the mouth.
The punch allegedly caused a cut to his upper lip that a Northampton firefighter told him would need stitches, Hall wrote.
Hansen allegedly admitted to police she threw the glass and struck the man with a broom and her fist but had hit him because he restrained her, according to Hall’s report.
Following her arraignment Monday, Hansen was released on personal recognizance.
