NORTHAMPTON — A Vermont man was sentenced to 2½ years in jail Wednesday after he admitted to breaking into Sylvester’s restaurant last fall.
Dan Greenwood, 43, of North Troy, Vermont, pleaded guilty in Hampshire Superior Court to charges of breaking and entering a building in the nighttime, larceny over $250 and breaking into a depository in the nighttime. He was arraigned on the charges in superior court on Jan. 30.
Northampton Police were called to the Pleasant Street restaurant around 4 a.m. on Oct. 24, 2017, by an alarm at the restaurant. When police arrived, they found signs that the front door had been forced in, Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Jayme Parent said in court Wednesday.
Using surveillance footage from Sylvester’s and area businesses, police determined that a man, later identified as Greenwood, broke into the restaurant and pried open both cash registers, taking around $150 from each one, Parent detailed.
Greenwood’s attorney, Alan Rubin, told the court that Greenwood has two active warrants out of Vermont — one by the state and the other a federal warrant.
Judge Richard Carey sentenced Greenwood to 2½ years in jail for each charge, to be served concurrently. Greenwood will received credit for 83 days he was incarcerated before his plea.
