AMHERST — No foul play is suspected in the death of a man found on Amherst College campus, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.
The office also said there are no concerns for public safety.
Authorities have tentatively identified the man but confirmation of his identity and notification of next-of-kin is pending. The official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Amherst College Police, Amherst Police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office are investigating.
An alert went out to the campus shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday asking students to avoid the area between Morris Pratt and Arms Music Center so police activity there was not disturbed. Shortly before 11 a.m., a second email was sent out from the college president’s office informing students that the college did not yet know the man’s identity or whether he had any affiliation with the school.
“I know that the uncertainty about the circumstances is very difficult,” Amherst College President Biddy Martin wrote in the email. “I will continue to keep you informed of what we learn. I am so sorry our community is having to deal with another tragedy.”
During spring break earlier this month, senior Andrew Dorogi, an economics major and member of the college’s football team, died in Mexico City.
The college has counselors available for students at the Keefe Campus Center and is making additional resources available, according to the email.
