Zakim to tour commonwealth

Democratic Candidate for Secretary of State Josh Zakim will begin a state-wide tour next week where he will meet with voters from Cape Cod to the Berkshires. Zakim won the endorsement of the Massachusetts Democratic Party on June 2.

โ€œNow is the time to really ramp up the campaign and meet with Massachusetts voters across the state,โ€ Zakim said in a statement. โ€œFrom meet-and-greets to voter registration drives, I will be eager to listen to individuals across the Commonwealth about how we can bring bold, progressive ideas to the office of Secretary of State.โ€

Zakim urged voters to join him for events at โ€œsome of my favorite places in Massachusetts.โ€ Zakim will be in Northampton on Tuesday at the Northampton Farmers Market along with Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz.

Velis endorses Carey for House

State Rep. John Velis, D-4th Hampden, has announced that he is endorsing Dan Carey for the Democratic nomination for the state House of Representativesโ€™ 2nd Hampshire District seat.

Velis said in a statement regarding his decision to endorse Carey that he knows Carey โ€œhas the character, integrity, and work ethic to be an exemplary State Representative.โ€

Velis was elected to the State House in 2014, and also serves as a captain in the Army Reserve. He is in the process of being deployed to Afghanistan, and wonโ€™t be in the country during the election.

โ€œSince I will be deployed during the election and will not be around to make the case myself, I want to take this opportunity to throw my support behind my friend Dan Carey,โ€ said Velis.

Carey said that he was โ€œthrilledโ€ to have Velisโ€™ endorsement and said he looked forward to working with him to โ€œensure that we receive our fair share of funding for all our schools, rebuild our roads and bridges, and to make the commuter rail expansion to western Mass. a reality.โ€ Carey continue by saying, โ€œI want to work with John, and for you, on these issues and many more.โ€

If Carey, a former Easthampton City Councilor, wins the seat, he will be following in the footsteps of his grandfather, William Carey, who held the seat for 12 years.
