Girls on the Run 5K kicks off Sunday

Girls on the Run of Western MA will host its 5-kilometer celebration on Sunday, at 10:30 a.m. at Springfield College.

Participation in the event is open to the public. There will be 950 girls from 68 schools around western Mass., and 280 volunteer coaches. The event expects to have over 2,500 participants.

The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be healthy, joyful and confident using an experiential-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in third to eighth grade. During the 10-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for the 5K event.

9th Annual Lake Wyola Road Race

The 39th annual Lake Wyola Road Race and Walk will be held on June 9 at 10 a.m. for the walk and 10:30 a.m. for the road race.

This is a 4.8-mile hilly, scenic course around beautiful Lake Wyola in Shutesbury. There is also a 1.5-mile fun run for the first time this year.

The race starts at the Lake Wyola Association Building at 6 Shore Drive. There are many prizes and a raffle open to all participants.

All proceeds benefit the Lake Wyola Association, which is dedicated to maintaining the health of the lake and its surroundings.

Montague Mug Race held Aug. 17

The 39th annual Montague Mug Race will be held on Aug. 17.

The 5.5-mile road race starts at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common. Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male/female finishers and coffee mugs to top finishers of each division. T-shirts go to the first 90 runners. The 15th annual Mini Mug race will kick off at 8:35 a.m.. This course is 2 miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into a drawing for local prizes.

The course is well marked with plenty of water stops and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.

Union 38 summer field hockey clinic

Union 38 will hold an introductory program for girls in grades 3-7 from the towns of Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway.

Frontier Regional varsity field hockey coach Missy Mahar will sponsor the three-day clinic from June 18-20. The focus will be on skill development with a variety of drills and learning scenarios. Field hockey sticks, balls and shin guards will be provided to the first 35 girls who register (there is an equipment deposit). Girls are asked to bring a mouth guard and water bottle each day.

The clinic runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day at Frontierโ€™s field hockey field in South Deerfield.

Equipment pick up is June 18 at 8:30 a.m. at Frontier. Registration is $80 with a $50 equipment deposit.
