NORTHAMPTON — A city man was arraigned in Northampton District Court on Monday for allegedly threatening a woman on the street with a knife.

Jacob Koffman, 43, of State Street, was arraigned on one charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on July 24 for a pre-trial conference.

According to a police report, Koffman is alleged to have threatened a woman on State Street with a knife when she was with a male companion, calling her names and saying that he was going to “slice her and cut her throat.”

When questioned, police say Koffman initially said that he did not know the woman or her male companion, and that she had asked him for a cigarette, before calling him a homophobic slur. He initially told police he walked away and had been afraid and that no knife was involved, according to a police report filed in court.

After police found a knife in the area and showed it to Koffman, police say that he acknowledged it was his knife and that he had pulled it out, but only because he could be harmed. He also alleged that the woman’s companion had physically assaulted him.
