An Anna Scagel goal in each half propelled the Smith Academy girls soccer team to a 2-0 win over Pathfinder on Thursday afternoon, improving the Falcons to 2-2-1 and snapping a three-match winless streak.
Scagel received a pass from Emily Pearl late in the first half, and was able to find the back of the net with less than five minutes to go until halftime as Smith Academy went ahead 1-0 going into the break. About five minutes into the second, Scagel was back at it. She buried another goal, this time coming off an assist from Nina Place, in the 45th minute.
Her two tallies occurred less than 10 minutes of game action apart, and gave the Falcons a 2-0 advantage that it would not surrender.
Vivian Higuera played well in goal, stopping all eight shots that came her way to earn the shutout victory.
Southwick 1, Amherst 0 — Lorelai Whalley buried a penalty kick for the Rams, which proved to be the difference on Thursday afternoon.
Amherst goalie Annika Redington saved 15 shots in the box as she did everything to keep it a one-goal game.
Frontier 0, Hampshire 0 — Jazzy Hayes made 17 huge saves for the Redhawks, as Hayes responded to the Raiders pressure by making play after play to secure the tie.
Karaghan Regalski had a shutout of her own, making nine saves in goal for Hampshire.
Holyoke 4, Palmer 3 — Kyra Lippman scored twice and added two assists as part of a four-point day to lead the Purple Knights on Thursday.
Leilany Figueroa scored twice as well, and Ishanellys Rivera tallied a helper. Holyoke goalie Kyleigh Luther made 15 saves in the win.
Northampton 1, Longmeadow 1 — The Blue Devils played extremely well against the undefeated Lancers, battling to a tie in an independent bout on Thursday.
Northampton is 2-2-1 this season.
Ludlow 3, Belchertown 1 — Aubrey Klingensmith scored a first-half goal to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead headed into the break, but the Lions responded with three straight to storm from behind and win.
Morghan Litz assisted the Klingensmith tally.
Boys soccer
Hopkins 2, Pioneer 0 — The Golden Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak with a shutout win over the Panthers on Thursday in Northfield.
Hopkins is now 2-5 on the season.
Gateway 2, Drury 0 — Andrew Chepurenko scored both goals for the Gators, the first two goals of the season as they picked up their first win to improve to 1-3.
Bow Briggs and Landon McCaul assisted the pair of scores and Zack Hess stopped seven shots in goal.
Smith Vocational 1, Southwick 1 — After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Vikings responded with a goal to tie it up, which would be the final score on Thursday afternoon.
It was Cameron Ball who scored for Smith Voc, coming up clutch to earn the draw.
Holyoke 2, Easthampton 0 — Ryan Kennedy and Xevier Davila scored goals for the Purple Knights in a back-and-forth battle with the Eagles. Nayan Tabin and Don Ampofo tallied assists.
Jaybriel Rivera Soto made four saves for Holyoke in the win.
“Both teams were evenly matched with back-and-forth play throughout the game,” Holyoke head coach Cam Rivest said. “We were able to capitalize on two well-executed team goals.”
Field hockey
Belchertown 1, Smith Academy 0 — Kina Roy scored an early goal for the Orioles, and they held off the Falcons the rest of the way to remain undefeated and hand Smith Academy its first loss of the year.
Edith Audette recorded an assist and Lila Roy made eight saves for Belchertown. Falcons keeper Chloe Avery stopped six shots in the cage.
“We put in a goal in the first few minutes, then it was a battle back and forth the rest of the way,” Orioles head coach Dina Brunetti said.
Hampshire 5, Mahar 0 — Two goals from Lily Connor and Neely Rondeau helped the Raiders to a decisive victory on Thursday afternoon in Orange.
Maddie Layman also scored for Hampshire while Holly Kowalcyzk, Rondeau and Olivia McCavoy added assists. Hampshire earned its second shutout win of the season.
Amherst 3, Franklin Tech 0 — Aria Haupt scored twice on two penalty strokes as the Hurricanes blanked the Eagles on Thursday in Turners.
Elizabeth Woodruff scored as well, while goalie Eden Polak stopped two shots to earn the shutout.
Girls volleyball
Holyoke 3, Easthampton 2 — It was a thrilling match on Thursday, and the Purple Knights came out on top with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13 victory.
Kaylin Dumas and Charlie Lusignan led the offense with four kills apiece. Brooke Skowron had five aces, 11 digs and nine assists, and Sophia Belfakih and Summer Routhier each tallied three aces in the loss.
Central 3, Belchertown 2 — It was a five-set thriller, but the Orioles were on the wrong end of it. Layla Liminski had 11 kills and 19 digs to lead the way.
Olivia Skora dished out 19 assists and had nine digs, Klara Shaink recorded four aces and three kills while Kaiya Cavanaugh (35) and Abigail Almeida (22) combined for a whopping 57 digs.
Baystate Academy 3, Frontier 0 — Six kills apiece from Avah Spearance and Greta Hale weren’t enough for the Redhawks as they fell to Baystate on Thursday.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-9.
Spearance added 19 assists, Caitlin Maio had five kills, 10 assists and five aces while Kaelyn Johnson tied a team-high with eight digs.
Smith Vocational 3, Veritas Prep 0 — Irelyn Marcoux had five aces, four kills and eight digs while Heidymar Diaz Lopez had five kills, three aces and eight digs to pace the Vikings to a dominant win.
Set scores 25-17, 25-17, 25-16.
Leah Franklin (five blocks, two digs, seven kills), Roma Bentrewicz (two aces, 13 assists, five digs, one kill) and Lily Sosa Cruz (two aces, 13 digs) played well in the victory.
Minnechaug 3, Amherst 1 — The ‘Canes showed fight in the third set, but they ultimately dropped a 25-19, 25-18, 24-26, 25-21 match to the Falcons on Thursday.
Kiko Bhowmik put down a dozen kills and had 16 digs, Alyciana Hackett recorded six kills, Rowan Albertson tallied three aces, three digs and five kills and Olivia Nolan (14) and Rosalie Davis (12) combined for 26 assists.
Golf
South Hadley 168, Easthampton 191 — Ryan MacGregor shot a 1-over 37 to lead the Tigers to a win over the Eagles on Thursday afternoon. Justin Moskal also shot a season-best score of 41 to help South Hadley to the victory.
Easthampton’s Amelia Gruber shot a team-best 40.
Frontier 151, Franklin Tech 164 — Brady Wood broke par with a 1-under 34, and the Redhawks won a competitive match on Thursday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Christian Powell shot 37 to aid the Frontier cause, and Tyler Galenski also broke 40 with a 39. It was career low rounds for both players.

Boys soccer
Granby 2, Mahar 0 — The Rams blanked the Senators on Thursday afternoon, with Gabriel Helbok and Anthony Santiago posting a goal apiece in the win.
Chris Gregorio added an assist for Granby while keeper Daniel Santiago made six saves.
Frontier 3, Hampshire 1 — Ian Paciorek netted two goals, including the eventual game winner in the 60th minute to power the Hawks to an impressive road win on Wednesday.
Scoreless at the half, Gus Radner staked Frontier to a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute before Hampshire pulled level five minutes later. Paciorek answered with the go-ahead goal off an assist from Eric Larsson, then tacked on an insurance marker in the 71st minute from Max Millette.
Colin Cahill scored the Hampshire goal, and goalie Isaiah Isa grabbed eight saves in the box.
