AMHERST — A nationwide protest focused on the Trump administration’s cutting of services, jobs and programs, and the general direction of the country, is set for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. on the North Common in front of Amherst Town Hall — one of several events scheduled throughout the week and into next weekend.
The “Light for Our Democracy” event is being put on by the League of Women Voters of Amherst, with a community-focused gathering and candlelight vigil addressing the loss of governmental positions and agencies and the threat to the stability of the government.
People are encouraged to bring signs and posters for the hourlong event, with people from Amherst and surrounding communities invited to the stand out.
State Rep. Mindy Domb, D-Amherst, is an invited speaker.
The protest is part of the 50501 project, which stands for 50 States, 50 Protests, One Day, and the March 4 Liberty, and comes before Trump is expected to speak to a joint session of Congress that evening.
Meanwhile, Indivisible groups in the region are planning a “No Kings Peaceful Demonstration — Stop the Coup” events on Tuesday morning and afternoon in Holyoke and Longmeadow.
Rise Up Western Mass Indivisible, Indivisible Northampton-Swing Left Western Mass, and others are joining nationwide actions on Tuesday to demand that the president stop his unconstitutional power grab, and that Congress fulfills its duty to stop him.
