Boating course open for registration

HOLYOKE — The Springfield Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, also known as America’s Boating Club, will hold its Basic Safe Boating Course at Holyoke Rows, 25 Jones Ferry Road, in Holyoke, beginning March 12.

The eight-week course will be held on Wednesday nights from 6:45 to 9 p.m. and is open to the public as well as to members of the Springfield Power Squadron.

The Safe Boating Course is critical for every boater in Massachusetts, since the Hanson-Milone Safe Boating Act was passed into law on Jan. 8 and requires all boat operators in the commonwealth to obtain a boater safety certificate. The new law mandates that all boat operators, including those operating personal watercraft, pass a boater safety education program and exam to obtain a safety certificate, and the certificate must be present on the vessel during operation.

The course, taught by experienced local instructors, and designed for boaters using any type of watercraft, including kayaks and canoes, is divided into several sections.

The price of the eight-week course is $45 per person, which reflects the cost of the textbook and related course materials. Interested participants can register in advance by contacting Kevin Abbey at 413-636-4804 or by email at rav131e@aol.com. Registration is also available at the door.
