AMHERST — A yearlong bicentennial celebration at the South Congregational Church in Amherst is beginning with a performance by singer-songwriters Jerry and Kara Noble on Feb. 4.

The Nobles will be at the 1066 South East St. church for the Musical Coffee House performance at 3 p.m. that day, performing traditional jazz classics from artists including Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, and others in an intimate coffeehouse setting.

Admission is free, though free-will donations of $20 are suggested, and reservations are required due to limited seating by calling 413-253-2977 or sending an email to office@amherstsouthchurch.org.

The concert is part of the South Congregational Church’s 200th Anniversary Celebration Arts and Social Justice Series, which will also include concerts by organists Nathan Laube and pianist David Porter, guest speakers Ancestral Bridges Foundation founder Anika Lopes, and Nolumbeka Project President David Brule and three book groups.

South Church began on May 3, 1824, when a preliminary agreement was signed to form the South Amherst Congregational Society, support public worship and to build a meetinghouse, according to church history.

As part of the anniversary, the church steeple has been removed and is being renovated.
