Last week I had the misfortune to need medical attention at Mass General Brigham, Cooley Dickinson Hospital for a minor but painful injury. I spent five hours waiting to be seen. However, I was very surprised waiting five hours in an emergency room would turn into a wonderful, heartwarming, educational experience.

During my stay, I saw many sick and injured people who were frightened and in distress. And, at the same time, I witnessed medical professionals working extremely hard with no rest or breaks, never deviating from their efforts helping those of us needing medical care. In addition to the hardworking professional staff, a Smith College volunteer circulated throughout the room and hallway offering pillows and blankets hoping to provide comfort to those patiently waiting to be seen.

Although the wait seemed long, everyone stayed calm and patient.Eventually, I was ushered into an exam room, seen by a hardworking doctor, and received the care I needed. I left feeling extremely grateful that I live in a community where there was such an outward expression of human compassion for one another.

Thank you to the hospital staff who worked relentlessly, the hospital security officers who kept us safe, and the volunteers who donated their time and talents to those in need.
