What started as crossing off a bucket list item has turned into an improbable feat for Miranda Wingfield.
Wingfield, a 2013 graduate of Northampton High School, completed the “Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming” a little over a month ago. On June 5, she swam 28.5 miles around the island of Manhatten, N.Y. in a successful attempt of the 20 Bridges Swim.
The other two successful swims to complete the triple crown are the English Channel and Catalina Channel, both of which she already finished. In 2018, Wingfield swam the English Channel – the only race she intended on doing, as it was on her bucket list.
But then in July of 2023, the opportunity to swim the Catalina Channel came forth. Two of Wingfield’s friends mentioned competing in the swim to her, and after initially steering toward turning down the proposal, she was on board following some more thought.
Wingfield eventually finished the swim in 11 hours, 27 minutes and 57 seconds, putting her just one race shy of completing the triple crown. At that point, she knew she wanted to reach that milestone.
And last month, after a stellar performance in Manhattan, Wingfield now swims in rare waters as a holder of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
