AMHERST — Frank Martin has landed his first transfer of the offseason. On Monday morning, Donovan Brown committed to play basketball for the Minutemen next season. Brown played for Division 2 Florida Tech, where he averaged 20.7 points per game and shot just above 36 percent from beyond the arc.

Brown also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists for Florida Tech. He may be a D2 transfer, but recent examples have proven moving from that level to Division 1 can yield strong results. The Drake men’s basketball team rostered four players from Northwest Missouri State, where its head coach Ben McCollum previously coached.

Bennett Stirtz was the most notable of the bunch, as he starred for the Bulldogs in his first year in Division 1. Averaging over 20 points per game is difficult in any collegiate division, so Brown can certainly play at a high level and will look to replace the holes made from the departures of Jaylen Curry and perhaps Rahsool Diggins (who is still waiting to hear on whether or not he has another year of eligibity) in the UMass backcourt.

In other transfer news, Minutemen forward Shahid Muhammad has hit the portal on Monday. Muhammad may have had the most defensive upside in UMass’ frontcourt, as the 6-foot-10 rising senior from Queens, N.Y. showcased his athleticism on a number of occasions. He led UMass in blocks this season, averaging 1.5 per game.

Muhammad’s offensive game certainly had holes in it, as he averaged just 3.5 points per game and rarely ever attempted a shot outside of the paint. He appeared in 31 games and averaged 12.5 minutes per contest. With Muhammad now departing from Amherst, that makes five UMass players in the portal. He joins Jaylen Curry, Amadou Doumbia, Akil Watson and Lewis Walker.
