The taps are back on in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON — A water main break that interrupted service on Audubon, River and Reservoir roads this morning has been repaired. All water service has been restored.
Leeds residents should flush their cold water systems, said Donna LaScaleia, director of public works.
“We’re flushing our system, so we’re advising people to flush theirs because there might be a little bit of dirt in the water,” LaScaleia said.
LaScaleia said the water is safe to drink, but residents should run their cold water taps until the water is clear and clean. The city anticipates its flush of the system to be finished by 5 a.m. Thursday.
The break occurred during ground excavation to make way for a new water main. The contractor accidentally hit the old 8-inch pipe.
The water tank that serves Leeds was isolated after the break, reducing water pressure in the village. Water department crews fixed the problem in a few hours.
By 12:30 p.m., crews had resumed the utility job on Audubon. The road will be repaved as a part of that construction.
