200 Years Ago

■The anniversary of the Declaration of Independence was celebrated in Northampton on Monday. An audience, collected without reference to party or political feeling, assembled at the Meeting House, where, besides the usual religious services and fine music, they were gratified by an address from Mr. Locke. After the exercise the company proceeded to Mr. Warner’s Hotel and partook of a festive dinner.

■Wanted, a journeyman clothier. A good workman at dressing broad cloth will find constant employ; one with a family can be accommodated. Eli Goodale, Robert’s Meadow, Northampton.

100 Years Ago

■Anxiously watching for a sign of improvement in the condition of Calvin Coolidge Jr., son of the President, in his fight against acute septic poisoning, the White House reluctantly announced at noon there had been no improvement during the night and morning, and the case continued very serious.

■The Florence fire department was called to Roberts Meadow about 1 o’clock yesterday morning, the old Moody tavern, owned by the late Arthur K. Sylvester, being on fire. The house was a mass of flames, and nothing could be done except to save other buildings on the property.

50 Years Ago

■Another stage on Northampton’s path toward becoming a stop on Amtrak’s Washington to Montreal railroad route was reached this week when the city signed a lease for the site on which it plans to build a passenger boarding platform.

■Workers at the University of Massachusetts were busy this week erecting a multi-level, Plexiglas geodesic dome as a throne for the Guru Maharaj Ji of India, who arrived at the campus last night. The guru’s throne is located just north of Alumni Stadium and is the point from which the guru will address some 10,000 people expected from across the nation during the weekend.
