A furious comeback fell just short for the Williston Northampton football team in its season opener Saturday.

The Wildcats trailed 28-7 going into the fourth quarter before tying the game at 28 with 40 seconds remaining.

Kent scored again to win 34-28.

Florenceโ€™s Ian Ostberg went 21-for-34 with 218 yards and three touchdowns for Williston (0-1).

His primary target was Austin Ryan, who caught eight passes for 102 yards and a score.

Derek Zewinski of Whately made five tackles on defense.

Girls soccer

Kingswood-Oxford School 0, Williston 0 โ€” Ana and Sophie Weed played strong games in the midfield in a home tie Saturday for the Wildcats (2-1-1).

Field hockey

Williston 8, Kingswood-Oxford School 0 โ€” Tori Palumbo, Anna Harvey and Gabby Jones scored two goals each in a road win.

Gabby Dicomitis and Kira Bixby combined for the shutout in goal Saturday.

Julia Maclean and Aidan Bourbonnais also had goals for Williston (2-1).

Girls volleyball

Williston 3, Berkshire School 1 โ€” Jersey Strum had five aces in a road win. Sarah Sullivan led the Wildcats (1-1) with 11 kills, while Granbyโ€™s Sarah Marion had five Saturday.

Boys cross country

Williston 25, Suffield Academy 29; Northfield Mount Hermon 26, Williston 33 โ€” Nick Hill finished second overall for the Wildcats.

Girls cross country

Northfield Mount Hermon 18, Williston 30; Worcester 25, Williston 30 โ€” Florenceโ€™s Abigail Touhey took third, while Southamptonโ€™s Chloe Prouty was seventh. Annika Johnson of Northamptno took eighth Saturday.

Boys water polo

Philips Exeter 17, Williston 2; Hopkins 8 Williston 2 โ€” David Fitch and Mark Wei scored Satruday in two losses for the Wildcats (1-3).
