AMHERST — Herrell’s Ice Cream is opening a permanent location in the Mill District in North Amherst, two years after first starting a pop-up site there.
The 69 Cowls Road location will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting Friday at 2 p.m.
Known for its extensive lineup of handcrafted ice cream and signature hot fudge sauces, dairy-free No-Moo flavors, sorbets and ice cream cakes, this will be the second retail shop for the company founded in 1980.
Its ice cream is still made in small batches in Northampton, where it has been a mainstay on Old South Street at Thornes Marketplace.
“I love the community spirit in Amherst, and it’s exciting to meet and greet longtime fans from the Amherst Area, as well as first-time visitors,” says owner Judy Herrell.
Jacob Robinson, executive director of the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce, noted the affection people have for Herrell’s.
“Their permanent Amherst location is a tremendous addition to the Mill District and another reason to spend the day exploring everything this vibrant North Amherst village center has to offer,” Robinson said.
The event, co-sponsored by the chamber, will conclude with a 6 p.m. showing of the film “Grease” in what is being billed as an “Under The Tent Movie Event.”
