- Children had many reactions today as Northampton’s 14 public schools reopened. School officials reported 4,673 students in attendance this morning, some 40 more students than were enrolled last year.
- Students at Northampton High School were warned today that Childs Park would be closed to them if littering and vandalism continues. Park trustees have complained that students who leave the high school during their free time are responsible for the vandalism.

- Preliminary talks about developing a 90-unit condominium complex on three parcels off Burts Pit Road have raised concerns about the effect on water pressure, wetlands and the rural character of the neighborhood, the fastest-growing ward in the city. So far, no proposal has been submitted to the city, though an early plan could be ready this fall, according to Patrick Goggins, who is handling the sale of the parcels earmarked for the project.
- Smith College has donated $25,000 to Forbes Library to help pay for the construction of a second-floor room that will house special collections as part of the $2 million final phase of a top-to-bottom renovation of the 107-year-old building.

- Patrick Cahillane clinched the Democratic nomination for Hampshire County sheriff Thursday night with a commanding 58 percent of the vote. Countywide, Melissa Perry finished with about 36 precent, or 4,836 votes, and Kavern Lewis captured roughly 5 percent, ending up with 684 votes. Cahillane claimed 7,763 votes countywide.
- Solomon Goldstein-Rose defeated five other candidates in the 3rd Hampshire District Democratic primary Thursday, winning the contest to succeed retiring state Rep. Ellen Story. Goldstein-Rose, 22, a recent Brown university graduate who served on the Amherst School Committee as a high school senior, outpaced Eric Nakajima, Sarah la Cour, Vira Douangmany Cage, Bonnie MacCracken and Lawrence O’Brien.
