BOSTON — The Amherst Regional girls 4x400-meter relay team will go down in history as one of the best units western Massachusetts has ever seen.

The ‘Canes quartet of Ololara Baptiste, Skylar Fox, Emilia Luetjen and Moriah Luetjen destroyed the competition during Saturday’s 37th annual New England Interscholastic Indoor Track & Field Championships at Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston.

Amherst turned in a sub-four minute time of 3 minutes, 55.70 seconds. Baptiste, Fox and the Luetjen sisters shattered their own season-best time of 4:01.49 – which was also the best in the state of Massachusetts – by nearly six full seconds, and beat out Bloomfield (Conn.) by over a full second to earn first place.

“The winning time was very fast and is probably the fastest time of any western Mass. team in history,” Amherst distance coach Bob Rosen said.

All four of Amherst’s runners ran sub-60 second splits, something extremely rare for public high school 4x400 relay teams. When this group won the state title at the same venue two weeks earlier, their winning time was a 4:05.34 before they improved it to a 4:01.49 at the MIAA Meet of Champions last Sunday.

They continue to get better and better as the season goes along, and a lot of that has to do with their anchor – Moriah Luetjen – finally getting back to full health after recovering from knee surgery most of the season. She anchored a 57-second split on Saturday after missing over two months. Baptiste (the only underclassman of the bunch), Fox and Emilia Luetjen also put together their best performances of the season.

It all came together at the right time for the Hurricanes, and they’ll look to continue on this trajectory at nationals in two weeks. The 2025 New Balance Nationals will be back in Boston from March 13-16. Amherst’s New England-winning time of 3:55.70 stands as the 19th-fastest mark in the entire country. And the way the four runners have improved each week as the season has progressed, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they haven’t yet reached their ceiling.

Elsewhere, Baptiste, the Luetjen twins and Ruby Austin took sixth place in New England in the 4x200m relay, crossing the line in 1:44.88 – yet another season best. That same group won the 4x200 at the MIAA Division 3 Championships two weeks ago, and came in fourth at the Meet of Champions last week.

Logan Alfandari competed in the boys shot put, and following his state championship at the D3 meet, he turned in a 10th-place finish with a throw of 54 feet, 4.75 inches. Alfandari has been one of the best throwers in the state since his sophomore season, and he’s had quite the senior season to cap off his high school career.

In the boys shot put wheelchair, Amherst’s Angel Hernandez tossed a season-best 9 feet, 11 inches to secure top honors. Hernandez hit the mark on his third of six throws Saturday, besting his toss from the Meet of Champions by six inches.
