All signs pointed toward another dominant Belchertown Post 239 performance through four innings of their Senior Division American Legion state tournament game at Fitton Field in Worcester on Wednesday afternoon.

Belchertown jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning, and held Hudson scoreless until the bottom of the fifth.

Five runs in the fifth, as well as four over the next two innings, brought Hudson all the way back, and a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh gave them an improbable 9-8 comeback win over Post 239.

The loss officially ended Belchertown’s season, one in which it didn’t lose a game until the state tournament. Its record for the summer finished at 17-2-1 after a 2-2 performance at the state level.

Hudson advanced to play in Thursday’s state championship game against either Shrewsbury or Lowell.

Cooper Beckwith (three RBIs), Ian McDonald and Cody West each ripped two hits for Post 239, with Beckwith and West recording doubles. Brady Perkins singled, walked and scored a run as well.

Beau Elson added a double and drove home two runs, while Patrick Fitzgibbons, Jake Waller and Evan Ferguson all tallied one hit, one RBI and scored one run in what was a balanced offensive effort.

Thatcher Rudnik earned the start on the mound, tossing five innings of work. Rudnik struck out three and walked two on three earned runs. Jake Waller came in to relieve him in the sixth.

Hudson still trailed 8-5 following its big fifth inning, but three more in the sixth knotted things up heading to the last. That’s when a walk-off single ended things in heartbreaking fashion for Post 239.

Belchertown outhit Hudson 11-9, but made three errors compared to its opponent’s two in the loss.
