It was quite the start to the postseason for the Smith Academy boys basketball team.
The fifth-seeded Falcons trailed No. 4 Monson by four points with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of their PVIAC Class D quarterfinal game Monday night in Monson. That set the stage for Cam Graves, who scored five points down the stretch, including the go-ahead jumper with less than a minute remaining to lift the Falcons to a wild 53-50 victory and a spot in the Class D semifinals.
Smith Academy (12-7) will play at No. 1 Pioneer in the semifinal round on Wednesday night in Northfield.
The Mustangs (12-7) led 50-46 with 2:17 to play after going on a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter. But the Falcons chipped away, sinking a pair of free throws before Graves’ jumper tied the game at 50.
After a stop on the defensive end, Graves hit another tough jumper from around the foul line, this one giving Smith a 52-50 lead.
It stayed that way until the waning seconds, when Monson’s Trey Dillahunt attacked the basket looking to tie the game. Dillahunt drew contact and hit a shot, but was whistled for an offensive foul with just 3.4 seconds remaining. Graves made one of two free throws on the other end, and Monson’s last-second heave to force overtime was off the mark.
It was a tight game throughout, as Monson led 28-27 at halftime and Smith held a 42-40 advantage entering the fourth.
Graves finished with 21 points while Garret Willard went for 14 points in the victory.
