Make it two wins in a row to start the season for the Amherst Regional boys tennis team, as the Hurricanes used two lengthy three-set doubles victories to get past Belchertown, 4-1, at the Amherst Middle School tennis courts on Tuesday afternoon.

Amherst’s Amitav Dhingra and Alex Pobezinskiy dropped the first set, 7-5, to Belchertown’s Tyler Burrows and Mason Pobieglo, but rallied to win the next two, 6-2, 6-3, to clinch the match at first doubles. The Hurricanes’ second doubles pair of Noah Magnus and Eli Ferris experienced the same setback in their match against Jake Gormely and Liam Sherwood. The Orioles’ duo won the first set (6-2), yet Magnus and Ferris came back to grab the next two (6-3, 7-5) and win.

Elias Katsaros (Amherst) defeated Josh O’Connor (Belchertown) at second singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Kai Roopnarine (Amherst) won via forfeit at third singles, as the Orioles didn’t have enough for a full lineup.

Luke Dudek nabbed the only win for Belchertown, defeating Brock Waldman 7-5, 6-1, at first singles.

Northampton 5, Central 0 — The Blue Devils were dominant across the board, only losing three total games in a clean sweep of the Golden Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.

Reilly Fowles (6-0, 6-0), Durrell Patrick (6-1, 6-0) and Kaz Sugihara (6-1, 6-0) won their singles matches in quick fashion while Ollie Levine and Reed O’Connor (first doubles, 6-0, 6-0) and Jude McCutcheon and Eli Wool (second doubles, 6-1, 6-0) handled business in the doubles matches.

PVCICS 4, Pope Francis 1 — The Dragons defended their home court with a decisive win over the Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon at Hampshire College.

Lee Ferguson handled his first singles opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, while Teddy Scott battled to earn a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win at third singles. PVCICS swept the doubles matches, with Gabe Loinaz and Devan Ye winning an absolute thriller at first doubles, 6-2, 3-6, 14-12, and Simon Speek and Ethan Wang pulling out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3 tiebreak) victory at second doubles.

Frontier 3, SICS 2 — Casey Bestler picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles while Oliver Brown earned a 6-1, 6-2 triumph in No. 3 singles for the Redhawks, which beat the Bulldogs in South Deerfield on Tuesday.

Noah Nichols and Xavier Fripp capped off the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 1 doubles.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 5, Agawam 0 — Amanda Murray (Belchertown) and Ryan Haglund (Agawam) had the match of the day at first singles, as the Orioles star won a 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 three-set nailbiter on Tuesday.

Everything else came relatively easy for Belchertown, with Mia Corish (second singles, 6-2, 6-2) and Gianna Picardi (third singles, 6-1, 6-1) picking up victories in singles and Katie Collins and Edith Audette (first doubles, 6-0, 6-0) and Allie Randall and Emma Kornbluth (second doubles, 6-3, 7-5) sweeping doubles.

Frontier 3, Chicopee 2 — The Redhawks swept Tuesday’s doubles matches and walked out of Szot Park 3-2 winners in their season-opener.

Esther Ehle and Kayla Fagan got better as their first doubles match went on en route to a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Brooke Charest and Hailey Fernandez earned a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at second doubles. Thanushi Ratnatunge (3-6, 6-0, 6-1) picked up a massive come-from-behind win at second singles, sealing the deal for Frontier.

Softball

Westfield 1, South Hadley 0 — As expected when Ella Schaeffer and Shea Hurley meet, runs were extremely hard to come by on Tuesday. Schaeffer, the Tigers’ ace, surrendered one run in the bottom of the first inning before mowing down Westfield’s lineup the rest of the way. She only allowed three hits.

Hurley only needed that one early run, as the Westfield star didn’t allow a walk and gave up only one hit – off the bat of Karli Carmody. Westfield lost in the Division 2 state finals last season.

Frontier 24, Mohawk Trail 0 — Eighth grader Raine Wonsey had a monster day for the Redhawks, going 4-for-5 with a home run and 5 RBIs at the plate while also throwing a complete game. Wonsey struck out 10 Mohawk Trail batters and only walked one.

Skyler Steele also homered as part of a three-RBI day, Liv Machon and Sophia Pinardi had three hits apiece and Ashley Taylor, Steele, Delaney Fifield and Abigail Schreiber (four RBIs) tallied two hits each. Every Frontier starter recorded a hit in the offensive outburst.

Wahconah 7, Hopkins 1 — The Warriors scored five runs across the first two innings, and the Golden Hawks bats could never get going as they fell to 1-1 with their first loss this season.

Alayna Bailey ripped two hits and drove in the lone run (Cassandra Dion) for Hopkins to highlight the offense. Dion struck out seven Wahconah hitters and gave up seven hits in a complete game in the circle.

Baseball

South Hadley 4, Palmer 2 — The Tigers were down 1-0 after the first inning, but scraped across one run in each of the next three frames and never trailed again in a Tuesday afternoon victory.

Noah Carillon, Jackson Keller and Caiden Drohan each tallied RBIs. Keller and Memphis Huertas both ripped a pair of hits and junior pitcher Justin Moskal struck out 11 Panther batters in his six strong innings of work on the mound.

Athol 15, Smith Academy 3 (5) — The Bears erupted for 12 runs in the top of the second inning, and that made all the difference on Tuesday as the Falcons played even (3-3) with Athol the other four frames.

Jake Wilcox tallied two hits to pace Smith Academy, Garret Willard had a hit and Harrison LaFlamme recorded a base knock and an RBI in the loss.

Ware 10, Granby 0 (6) — The two-time reigning Western Mass. champions got the best of the Rams on Tuesday afternoon, scoring three runs in the first, second and third innings to hand Granby a run-rule defeat.

Brodie Funk ripped a pair of hits for Granby as did Joseph Barrett. Brandon Carillon (hit, walk) also reached base twice.

East Longmeadow 15, Holyoke 2 (5) — The Spartans scored in every inning, including six in the fifth frame, as Holyoke had no answer for the potent visitors’ attack Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Jaden Diaz reached base in all three of his plate appearances, tallying two hits and drawing a walk.

Boys volleyball

Granby 3, Duggan 0 — The Rams made quick work of the Bulldogs on Tuesday evening, sweeping Duggan on the road 25-10, 25-17, 25-18 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Jake Gagnon put down a team-high seven kills, added seven assists and three aces. Nathan Walsh had a whopping 10 aces while he, Braedan Gallagher and Daniel Santiago each recorded three kills.

SICS 3, Holyoke 2 — Chalk it up as the second straight match of the season in which the Purple Knights lost in five sets, this time at the hands of the Bulldogs.

Holyoke hosts Commerce on Thursday looking to get in the win column in 2025.

Girls lacrosse

Agawam 16, South Hadley 6 — Caitlin Dean scored three times for the Tigers, but South Hadley’s defense couldn’t contain the Agawam offense in Tuesday’s loss.

Ava Asselin, Raquel Losty (one assist) and Margaret Watkins (10 draw controls) all scored goals while Tigers goalie Riley Nestor made eight saves.

Westfield 15, Belchertown 6 — Lia Pikul netted four goals for the Orioles, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a goal-scoring onslaught from the Bombers on Tuesday afternoon.

Veronica Dymkowski and Lily Tellier each scored goals for Belchertown as well.
