High schools: Frontier sweeps Athol in boys volleyball action (PHOTOS)

Make it three wins in a row for the Frontier boys volleyball team to open the season. 

Taking on Athol, Tavo Vincent-Warner distributed 40 assists, with Jesse Kurkulonis on the receiving end of 12 kills, to lead the the Redhawks to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-13 sweep over the Bears at Goodnow Gymnasium on Wednesday. 

Aleks Carey smashed nine kills, Owen Babb put down eight kills, Jack Carey tallied six kills, Brady Burch recorded five kills while Ngawang Deter came up with 10 digs in the victory. 

Ethan Goodwin and Logan McGrath both cracked four kills for Athol. Colin Mason had three kills and Holden Girouard tossed out 17 assists in the loss. 

Belchertown 3, Chicopee 0 – Connor White was electric for the Orioles, leading the offense with 13 kills in a dominant three-set win (25-16, 25-17, 25-16). 

Rainer Kristensen had 15 assists and Gabriel Ibekilo had five kills and three blocks. Zach Dragon also slammed home seven aces. 

Baseball

Belchertown 11, Palmer 0 – Josh Misiaszek struck out nine batters and allowed just nine hits in a shutout win over Palmer. 

Brady Perkins collected a double and scored twice and Ian McDonald and Tyler McDonald both scored twice for the Orioles. Four Belchertown players picked up a pair of RBIs each – Perkins, Tyler McDonald, Jack Dinapoli and Derek Gould.

Granby 6, Easthampton, 4 – The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead, but a four-run fourth inning boosted the Rams to a victory on Wednesday. 

Bradie Funk earned the win on the mound, pitching three innings and striking out four with no earned runs. Colin Murdock belted two hits and plated twice and Spencer Labonte added two runs and two RBIs for the Rams. 

Ethan Mullaly struck out two batters in four innings for Easthampton, while Chris Gallagher had a hit and an RBI for the Eagles. 

Hampshire 10, Ludlow 0 (5) – Drew Thompson threw five innings in his season debut, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 in a shutout win over Ludlow. 

Thompson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a triple, also driving in an RBI. Zach Phakos went 2-for-2, knocking in three runs and picking up a double and Liam Pond also hit  a double in the first inning, sending two runs home. 

South Hadley 8, Athol 2 – Jackson Keller had two hits and a run and Nate Carillon had two stolen bases and two RBIs in the Tigers’ win. 

Benjamin Foley also had a hit and a run for South Hadley. 

Frontier 9, Mt. Greylock 3 — The Redhawks avenged their 2022 Western Mass. Class C finals loss on Wednesday, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings to pull away with an independent win over the Mounties in South Deerfield. 

Grayson Loos also got the win on the mound, tossing the opening five innings and striking out seven while allowing just one hit. Aidan Heffernan came on for the final two innings,  allowing just one hit and striking out one. Kaden James added another throw out from behind the plate in the win. 

 Softball

South Hadley 7, Chicopee Comp 2 — Tigers ace Isabella Schaeffer continued her torrid to start to the season in the circle, striking out 18 batters and allowing just one hit and one walk to propel her side to a 7-2 victory on Wednesday.

Ara Powers aided the offensive effort with a 3-for-3 day at the plate in the win, while Jenna Bobrowski added a pair of hits for South Hadley (2-1). The Tigers trailed 1-0 early before pushing four runs across in the bottom of the first to take control.

Agawam 13, Frontier 4 — Host Agawam broke open a 2-2 game with a seven-run bottom of the fourth inning en route to the 13-4 independent win on Wednesday.

Frontier (1-1) committed 10 errors in the loss. Skyler Steele paced the offense with two hits (single, triple), while Sophia Pinardi added a pair of singles for the Hawks. Ashley Taylor and Olivia Machon combined for eight strikeouts in the pitching circle for the visitors.

Girls lacrosse

Granby 17, Monson 5 – The Rams jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead at halftime and Granby's Ella Laliberte notched six goals, including her 200th career goal, in a blowout win over Monson. 

Laliberte dished out three assists in addition to her six goals, and Brenna Morreno added a pair of goals and assists. Kelly-Lynne Kennedy notched a hat trick and an assist and Ava Loughman scored twice for Granby. Faith Ramos made two stops in net. 

Boys tennis

Belchertown 3, Agawam 2 – No. 1 singles player Trevor Weiss won every one of his games against Agawam’s Dylan Fisk (6-0, 6-0) and both of the Orioles’ double teams picked up wins to give Belchertown the win over Agawam. 

Beside’s Weiss’ win, No. 1 doubles team Jake Gormely and Camryn Kaczowka won a three-set showdown against Nolan King and Minje Kim (4-6, 6-0, 6-4) and No. 2 doubles Tyler Burrows and Luke Dudek bested their opponents in two sets (6-0, 6-2). 

PVCICS 5, Turners Falls 0 – PVCICS dropped just two games across all five matches against Turners Falls, sweeping their opponents on Wednesday. 

No. 1 Aiden Cleary (6-0, 6-2) defeated Mike Boyle, while No. 2 singles Hugo Shinn and No. 3 singles Clayton English both won 6-0, 6-0. Both doubles teams -- No. 1 doubles James and Teddy Scott and No. 2 doubles Gabe Luinaz and Asa Taggert –  also won 6-0, 6-0. 

East Longmeadow 3, Amherst 2 – The Hurricanes couldn’t snag the win over East Longmeadow, falling one match short of a win. 

No. 1 singles Miles Jeffries (7-5, 6-3) and No. 3 singles Elias Katsarose (7-5, 6-0) won their matches for Amherst. 

Boys track & field

Hampshire 122, Monson 19 – Hampshire won all 17 events in a dual meet win over Monson. Ayden St. Martin won three events – the long jump (16-5.25), the high jump (4-10) and the 100 hurdles (19.40). 

Jaiden Kudelka also won both the triple jump (37-3) and the 100 meter dash (11.05) for the Raiders. 

Easthampton 89, South Hadley 44 – Giuseppe Denucce-Simms won a whopping four events, posting wins in the the long jump (18-3), the shot put (32-2.5), the discus (103-1.5) and the triple jump (36-8) en route to Easthampton’s victory in a dual meet against South Hadley. 

Also winning a pair of events was South Hadley’s Jameson Webber, who placed first in the 400 hurdles (1:06.9) and the 110 hurdles (20.2). 

Girls track & field 

South Hadley 95.5, Easthampton 30.5 – A trio of Tigers helped propel South Hadley to a win over Easthampton on Wednesday. 

Emma Sanford won the 100 hurdles (16.5), the 400 hurdles (1:17.4), the 200 dash (27.4) and the high jump (4-8), Abby Gelinas picked up wins in the 100 dash (13.4) and the long jump (15-3) and Lexie Scott won both the shot (27-2.5) and the discus (71-2). 

Hampshire 113, Monson 19 – Sadie Mahon-Moore won both the discus (58-7) and shot (20-3.75) in Hampshire’s dual meet win over Monson.

Other event winners included Kathleen Barry, who crossed the line first in the two mile (12.37), Ava Gaida, who won the 100 hurdles (17.5) and Sicily Chase, who ran a 2:46 in the 800. 

Williston results

The defending NEPSAC champion Williston girls water polo team continued their winning ways with a 14-4 win over Choate. Campbell Collins led the way with six goals. Elsewhere, boys lacrosse fell to Albany Academy despite two goals and four assists from Noah Fox.

The boys golf team received a low round of 39 from Eric Carter in a quad match in Simsbury, Conn., while the boys ultimate team beat NMH, 15-4, with eight goals thrown from Alex Hall-Witt. The softball team won its opener, 12-2, over Ethel Walker behind a 10-strikeout performance from Maggie Fay and three hits from Violet Carroll. Baseball won its opener over Milbrook, 6-4, with four innings of work from Jack Berrien and a hit and two RBIs from Caleb Boyko.

Girls tennis fell to NMH, 7-1, with a win from Katya Krasnovskya at No. 2, and boys tennis took down Cheshire, 5-4, with a thrilling victory from Est Sukcharoenyingyong (10-8 in a tiebreaker).

Ultimate

Amherst 12, NMH 5 — The Hurricanes got their season off to a flying start Wednesday, as Felix Goeckel scored four goals and Addie Mager had three in a 12-5 win over NMH. The JV team also won, 10-3.
